Stony brook is a small steep stream located in southern NH. If you are thinking of getting into steep creaking then try Stony brook as one of your first excursions. The two toughest drops, Broken dam and Funnel ledge, can easily be portaged. Stony brook has many 2 and 3 foot ledge drops in a small river channel. It is a very short run that can be done over several times. Most of the drops are located out of sight from Rt 31 which parallels the stream. Stony Brook is a popular trout fishing stream in the Spring so look out for dangling fishing hooks from the low branches especially on the lower parts of the stream. Put in: Interstate 93 to NH 101 in Manchester. Go west on NH 101 approximately 25 miles. At the intersection of NH 31, take a right (north) in the town of Wilton. Continue on 31 north by taking a left on Main street in Wilton. When NH 31 croses over Stony Brook, take a left at the fork and park there. Put in upstream of the bridge. Take out: Head back towards Wilton South on NH 31. Park on the shoulder on the right just before a mill and dam downstream.
