Massabesic Lake, located partly within NH's largest city, Manchester and partly in Auburn, serves both as a water supply and scenic place to fish. The shore is undeveloped, the lake is surrounded by hills, and the water is extremely clean and clear. The rocky shore and bottom account for the above average Smallmouth Bass fishing here. Massabesic has an excellent reputation as a top-notch Bass lake. The best time to fish for Smallmouth Bass here is in early spring just after ice-out, but good fishing is available throughout the summer. There is also a good Chain Pickerel fishery and many large Chain Pickerel are taken here each year. Massabesic was one of the first lakes in the state to be stocked and over the years it has been filled with everything from Lake Trout to Landlocked Salmon. Today the only remaining cold water fish are Rainbow, Brook and Brown Trout. There are several access points and launch sites around the lake. The lake is large enough to support many fisherman, but the fishing pressure is very light on most days. Average ice-out date is late April.
